How We Work
Our society brings anime and anime culture to the masses of the University of Kent. If you're not sure what that means, or for more information, take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions page. We do this in a number of ways...
Thursday Night Showings
Every Thursday evening we take over Rutherford Lecture Theatre 1 from 7pm till 11pm, and show a couple of solid blocks of anime, separated by a short interval. We show all manner of things from popular series to films to the latest and greatest straight out of Japan.
Our Thursday Night Showings are completely free for anyone to attend. You don't have to be a member, so you can feel free to come along and see what it's all about. Just take a look at the FAQ page linked above for more details.
Nothing is set in stone for what we will show in the future, so feel free to offer any suggestions you might have by dropping us an email or letting us know at a meeting.
Weekend Showings
We also run weekend showings, in order to bring you even more anime. Some of these showings attempt to show as much of one series as possible, while some are taster showings of the latest shows, or even theme showings where we show selected episodes of a few shows to give an overview of certain genres or themes. If you’re hardcore enough to stay for the whole showing, be sure to bring food or money for snacks, or the pure concentrated anime will rush straight into your bloodstream. Sometimes we will also move on to Origins afterwards for dinner.
Again, these showings are completely free, so feel free to turn up, even just for a short while. These showings are usually held in the Darwin building. Details will be announced during our Thursday Night Showings™ and on the mailing list, as they become available.
Workshops
We run various workshops throughout the year; normally including Manga-ka Check (Art lessons), J-Talk (Japanese language), and Cosplay Workshop. Check out the workshops page for more details.
Trips
Every October and May we take a coach full of intrepid anime fans (though those of you from SFX and AGS are also welcome) to the London MCM Expo, a convention for all things anime, sci-fi, cosplay, comics and video games. There you can frolic with other fans, check out the stalls full of great merchandise to buy, or check out events like the Cosplay Masquerade – check out the Expo website to find out more. We’ll let you know how to sign up for the trip closer to the time through the mailing list and at our showings.
Loans Library
If you were wondering what you get for your membership fee of £3, this is it. Access to the loans library is exclusive to fully paid members, with no exceptions.
The library contains several hundred items, including both anime and manga. Each week members can reserve items in advance of the Thursday Night Showing using our online reservation system. Then, during the interval of the showing, members can queue up in front of our librarian who will hand out the reserved items. Items are loaned for one week, and must be returned the following Thursday. If you want something for more than one week, you'll have to reserve it again.
